Dr Lips Nipple Balm for Lips… Who? What? Where?

… It’s a cult beauty product that has been recommended by many make-up artists and beauty bloggers. Aside from the unusual/ interesting name, what makes it the balm on everyone’s lips? (Pun intended)

The story (from Cult Beauty):

Recommended by midwives, Dr Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips was originally designed to relieve the dry, painful nipples associated with breastfeeding, moisturising skin by up to 40 per cent in an hour. Make up artists discovered other uses, especially as an SOS lip balm, and it soon became an industry secret.

Sales blurb: A cult make-up kit essential! A true 100% natural SOS balm with multipurpose properties for use on dry, sensitive skin, eczema, cuticles, burns and abrasions, sore nipples and even baby’s bottoms!

First impressions
My first thoughts upon opening my package from Cult Beauty were Is that all? I hadn’t expected it to be so small a tube for £11 for 15ml (i.e. around £36.67 for 50ml), which makes it significantly more expensive than that other industry favourite multi-purpose balm/ gel, the Elizabeth Arden 8H skin protectant gel (£25 for 50ml).

Putting price aside, the balm is just as thick as 8H cream but is a different texture. 8H cream tends to melt as it is warmed by your fingers and is very glossy on the lips. Nipple Balm is a similar deep hydrating treatment, but without the gloss/ gunk. It is absorbed much faster by lips and is very soothing on cracks. The Nipple Balm gives a natural matte finish and it just gets to work really quickly. Like 8H cream, a little goes a long way and so the £11 feels well-spent.

The fast absorption is a huge plus, as it means that you can apply lipstick straight away after applying Nipple Balm and you won’t get lipstick slippage or smudging. I have used Carmex Original on clients with very dry lips, and then moved onto eyes, face etc while it works it’s magic, and then have come back to the lips. With Nipple Balm, there’s no need to wait, which is great if you’ve forgotten to slip on 8H cream or Carmex beforehand.

The fact that it’s made from all natural ingredients is a bonus. I don’t exclusively search out 100% vegan products (I’m a meat-eater and I don’t always buy cruelty-free make-up), I just like things natural where possible. In that sense, the Nipple Balm is great, as it doesn’t contain any harsh or dodgy chemicals which, as it’s on your lips, you’ll end up ingesting.

I need to use it a bit more on myself and clients before I start hailing it as a Holy Grail product, but first impressions are that it’s pretty awesome.
