You know the feeling when you buy a bold colour on sale and then think – what the heck will I wear this with? That was me, and the Tarte Amazonian Clay Liner in Margarita, yes, lime green.
Lockdown after lockdown and restrictions have finally eased temporarily. Weddings are back on. In-person social life could re-start again for most of us.
I was gagging for party season and one of my oldest friends got married. I RSVP’d asap and was itching to get my party looks going on too.
The mehendi look
Asian mehendi parties usually have bold, bright colours for the theme. If there is no colour theme set by the bride or grooms family, then staples colours are green or orange. I went for the green option, mainly because I had this stunning lime green saree and the lime green liner that I was desperate to make use of. After a last minute dash that morning to hunt for a pink or green hijab to match the outfit, I found this basic crimped hijab in a slightly softer than lime green shade in a bargain store on Whitechapel Road. Result!
Here’s the makeup look I knocked together in about 10 minutes, due to my last minute shopping run and a really hot August day meaning I needed a second shower before getting ready. Time was really against me that day.

I kept it basic and my skin is in great condition at the moment, so I skipped foundation and went with a glowing highlight base and some undereye colour corrector, lightly set with powder. No blush, no falsies, no fuss. Perfect for a really hot, humid August evening.

Step by step
- Lightly dust the eyelid with a matte nude shadow shade. Apply to the mobile lid, the crease and just above the crease. I did this to absorb any excess oils on my eyelids, as it was a hot, humid summer day/ evening.
- Take a flat eyeshadow brush and apply the line green cream liner all over the lid, skipping the inner corner.
- Take a second, clean fluffy eyeshadow brush and buff the eye colour into the lid, and buff out the edges.
- Take a matte highlight (or shimmer if you prefer) and apply to inner corner of the eyes.
- Tight line the upper lash line with black gel liner.
- Line the waterline with black gel liner.
- Apply a couple of coats of black mascara.
- Eyes done!
- Use the ring finger and lightly press the colour corrector onto the undereyes. Pat and blend as you go.
- Take a fluffy foundation brush or clean, fluffy eyeshadow brush and set the undereye lightly with face powder.
- Then take a few small drops of the Glow Cherie and apply to the face, starting from the centre of the face and blending outwards with fingers.
- Lightly set the face with setting powder.
- Pop a slick of liquid lip colour on, allow to dry, then you’re good to go.
And there it is. A quick and easy way to sue a bold colours an accent or feature colour. I kept the rest of the face light and minimal, so that the eyes really stood out. A nude lip is a good idea so as not to compete for attention with the eyes, and complement the bold colours with more nudes and neutrals.
If you didn’t want the lime green all over the eye, you can switch it up. Nude eyes, line green eyeliner with a killer green wing. Skip the black tightline, curls lashes and add a coat of brown or black mascara. Or if you wanted an even more subtle pop, you could go for a nude or similarly subtle eye ad use the line green just at the inner corners of the eyes. This is a very wearable catwalk trick was all over the catwalks in 2020.
